nginx on Ubuntu: Permission denied
If i assume that your second code is the puppet config then i have a logical explaination, if the error and log files were create before, you can try this sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/log/nginx; sudo chmod -R 755 /var/log/nginx;

the socket API bind() to a port less than 1024, such as 80 as your title mentioned, need root access. here is "Bind to ports less than 1024 without root access" and another easier way is to run nginx as root.

Installing Hue, permission denied error?
It seems that it is starting to start Beeswax in /usr/local/hue/desktop/conf. Beeswax should be running as the 'hue' user by default (https://github.com/cloudera/hue/blob/master/desktop/core/src/desktop/supervisor.py#L67) so it need to be writable by 'hue'.

Permission Denied error in excel vba
You are forgetting to close the file when the function returns, you currently only do so when there is an error. The file handle persists between runs of you code so when you re-run it you attempt to operate on a file that is already open and explicitly locked, causing an error.

Why do I get a "permission denied" error while installing a gem?
Your Ruby is installed in /usr/local/Cellar/ruby/.... That is a restricted path and can only be written to when you use elevated privileges, either by running as root or by using sudo. I won't recommend you run things as root since you don't understand how paths and permissions work. You can use sudo gem install jekyll, which will temporarily elevate your permissions, giving your command the rights needed to write to that directory. However, I'd recommend you give serious thought into NOT doing that, and instead use your RVM to install Ruby into your own home directory, where you'll automatically be able to install Rubies and gems without permission issues. See the directions for installing into a local RVM sandbox in "Single-User installations". Because you have RVM in your ~/.bash_pro

PHP socket error Permission denied on Linux
Check your php.ini settings for the parameter "safe_mode". It should be "Off". Another problem could be caused by "selinux" that is blocking your mod_php (apache process) from connecting via socket. In this case: # check if it's enabled: /usr/sbin/sestatus -v to add the connecting rule: setsebool httpd_can_network_connect=1 If you want to disable it completely: setenforce 0 Also, for debug reasons, disable any security module on apache/PHP. For example try to disable Suhosin if it's running.

Permission error zc.buildout with nginx
Port 443 is below 1024, which means it is a protected port, only open-able by root. So your buildout is correct, you're just running into a 30 old unix restriction :-) Starting nginx on port 8443 or so will probably work fine. An option: run it on an unprivileged port from buildout, but redirect traffic there from some globally installed server.

PG::Error: ERROR: permission denied for relation schema_migrations
It would seem that you haven't set up your psql role (or user, they're very similar in postgres). Also, I'm not sure if postgres would complain about having a role and no password for login (as you have to tell postgres that a user/role is allowed to login) if you enter psql as the root db user, you can set up roles nicely by doing: create role my_blog with login password '' createdb; Also, just for convenience, if you're using postgres, it could be worth installing the Postgres app, it generally makes administration of postgres a lot easier by not needing passwords to get into admin which would allow you to easily see/drop tables if you ever get stuck. Here's a nice list of some commands for administering postgres from the psql cli

Permission denied error while writing to a file in Python
To answer your first question: yes, if the file is not there Python will create it. Secondly, the user (yourself) running the python script doesn't have write privileges to create a file in the directory.

My first guess here is that you should not use set :permission_method, :acl, but set it to chmod. Check this out - Automatically set proper permissions. Btw, which version of Unix do you run? Also check that you really need to specify user and use_sudo at the same time. It can be the reason too.

SVN error E720005, permission denied on binary files
I am working with svn on a network windows shared drive. No! Bad developer! No donuts for you! Permissions on Windows is very tricky, especially if shared drives are involved. You should not use the file:// protocol in this instance. You will have problems with permissions. I don't even use the file:// on Unix systems even as my private repository. I always launch svnserve and use svn:// as a protocol. It's simple to setup svnserve on Windows as a Windows service. There are quite a few Windows packages that pack Apache httpd and Subversion together, and then automatically setup almost everything for you. There is no reason to use a shared drive on Windows and use the file:// protocol. Check the permissions of all files and subdirectories in your repository. Even though you are the

error: [errno 13] Permission denied - What permissions does bottle py require?
Thanks to @Wooble I realised that permission error had to do with the port and not the file system. A working workaround is to use port above 1024 which works perfectly and is fine for development. Using port 200 for now: run(host='someIP', port=2000) I am still looking for a port 80 permission error solution though.

Aws EC2 EBS setup gives error ls: cannot open directory /mnt/my-data/: permission denied
When you create /mnt/my-data using the above two commands, the directory ends up being owned by root. In order to change this: sudo chown -R ec2-user:ec2-user /mnt/my-data (Assuming ec2-user is your current user.) Now it should work and you should be able to use that directory as your regular user.

Can't open database on 2nd user account, error EACCES (Permission denied)
The second account seems to have no rights to write to /data/data... Correct. So, what can be done about it? I am guessing that you hard-coded a path. If so, do not do this. Use getDatabasePath() to find the proper path to the database for the current user. Is there a folder which can be used to share data between users?! Not that I am aware of. Even external storage is separate between users. In effect, separate user accounts on a device are as if those users are on completely separate devices.

SecurityException: Permission denied (missing INTERNET permission?)
[Make sure you read whole answer, incl. addendum at the very end!] Exception you are getting (SecurityException: Permission denied (missing INTERNET permission?)), clearly indicates that you are not allowed to do networking. That's pretty indisputable fact. But how can this happen? Usually it's either due to missing <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> entry in your AndroidManifest.xml file or, as internet permission is granted at installation not at run time, by long standing, missed bug in Android framework that causes your app to be successfully installed, but without expected permission grant. My Manifest is correct, so how can this happen? Theoretically, presence of uses-permission in Manifest perfectly fulfills the requirement and from developer sta

permission denied to access property 'tostring' error in Firefox, and some jQuery plugin is not working
I'm sorry to see no replies to this because I am seeing the same behavior. Specifically, it says: An error occurred while attempting to process /views/ajax: Permission denied to access property 'toString' This apparently only happens in Firefox v.18.0.x or later so am I correct to assume Mozilla introduced this bug? I know they are working on their own mobile OS platform -- wondering if that has anything to do with it.

bashdb startup error: bashdb/lib/setshow.sh: line 91: /dev/pts/2: Permission denied
Since programs often have stdout and stderr redirected, bashdb tries to write its output to a tty, unless directed otherwise; bashdb determines the console running the tty command. Normally you don't need to run bashdb as root. But for reasons that are a mystery here, the user you are running bashdb as, is not able to write to the tty registered to it. That is: echo hi > $(tty) will probably give you the same "Permission denied". Probably ls -l $(tty) will tell you what's up there. However, as suggested in the comments, you can workaround this by running as root such as via sudo: e.g. sudo bashdb -- putxen.sh Another workaround is to add your user to the group, e.g. tty that is listed when you run ls -l $(tty).

When saving excel file (openpyxl) and then trying to make excel open it on mac get `Permission denied` error
On my system (mac 10.6.8, python2.7.5, gcc 4.2.1) the following code works fine: from openpyxl import Workbook from os import system wb = Workbook() outputf = 'test.xlsx' wb.save(outputf) # see below * system('open ' + outputf) (see comments: I lost the bet. The error was somewhere else in the code and has nothing to do with system('open ' + whatever)) I bet there is something wrong with permissions in your new file on your system. Maybe you add (docu) st = os.stat(outputf) os.chmod(outputf, st.st_mode | stat.stat.S_IRWXU | stat.S_IRWXG | stat.S_IRWXO) (with input from other link) in the code instead of my commentary ('# see below *') Then it should be possible to open it by everyone and everything... IE permission denied
The permission denied error could be coming from trying to manipulate the DOM before the document is ready. As for the events and formatting no longer working, using JavaScript and jquery to select things can cause issues. When you use document.getElementById it will update the DOM and the rendered page but it will not update the associated jQuery objects. To solve this you either need to re-generate the jQuery object (using $('selector')) and reattach the handlers or try something like $(document.getElementById('objectId')).html('result'); where you use javascript to find the DOM element to avoid the permission error then modify if using the associated jQuery object.
