Why node.js can't run on shared hosting?
There are other ways to deploy node.js apps. You can use PaaS services, like Openshift, Heroku, AppFog, Paastor, dotCloud etc.

Using SQL Server databases on shared hosting
In this scenario you should not attach your own DB files. Create a new database (e.g. using SSMS or host's Control Panel) on the server provided by the host. Import your local data into that DB and use new server/db/uid/password in your connection string. If your host already provided you the DB - just use existing DB (don't create a new one) but still import your local data into that DB.

Multiple web.config on shared hosting
The only way to have a subdirectory act as a separate application with its own web.config is to configure it to be a separate IIS application. In a dedicated hosting environment, you'd do this within IIS. However, the fact that you're on a shared hosting platform doesn't automatically make it impossible. Most shared hosting provides a web interface that you use to configure your site, and often - but not always - that interface will give you the ability to set up subfolders as separate applications. I can't tell you whether you have this option or where it is, since I don't know what control-panel software/product your hosting uses (and even if I did, I probably wouldn't be familiar with that specific product/version, but it's worth having a dig around in your control panel to see if yo

htaccess for symfony2 in shared hosting

Shared hosting - catch user ip
IP address of your website differ on Shared Hosting. Many websites on Shared Hosting may have different DNS names but same IP addresses. You will get a same IP address only when you are on Dedicated Hosting Server. EDIT : Try this alternative code <?php function get_client_ip() { $ipaddress = ''; if (getenv('HTTP_CLIENT_IP')) $ipaddress = getenv('HTTP_CLIENT_IP'); else if(getenv('HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR')) $ipaddress = getenv('HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'); else if(getenv('HTTP_X_FORWARDED')) $ipaddress = getenv('HTTP_X_FORWARDED'); else if(getenv('HTTP_FORWARDED_FOR')) $ipaddress = getenv('HTTP_FORWARDED_FOR'); else if(getenv('HTTP_FORWARDED')) $ipaddress = getenv('HTTP_FORWARDED'); else if(getenv('REMOTE_ADDR')) $ipa

What is the best way to handle a lot of images from a shared hosting plan?
Before you contrive a bunch of subdomains to maximize parallel connections, you should profile your page load behavior so you know where most of the time is being spent. There might be easier and more rewarding optimizations to make first. There are several tools that can help with this, use all of them: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/ http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/ http://www.webpagetest.org/ Some important factors to look at are cache optimization and image compression. If you've done all those things, and you are sure that you want to use multiple (sub)domains, then I would recommend using a content delivery network (CDN) instead of hosting the static files (images) on the same shared server. You might consider Amazon's CloudFront service. It's super easy to set

starting a websockets server in php on shared hosting
Not having SSH access to your shared hosting is pretty flaky. That said... You can use exec to run something on the command line from a triggered script. For instance, if you have a controller action that you call from a URL like http://mysite.com/server/start, you could embed the line: $lastLine = exec("php server.php"); Of course, this command will not return until the command finishes, so you will never get a response from this script (unless it fails). So I would use popen, which will fork the process and return right away, allowing your controller to return a response. $handle = popen("php server.php", "r"); At some point, you are probably going to want to stop this server. You can use passthru and posix_kill with a little unix CLI magic to get this done, maybe in another contr

Hosting Nopcommerce Using Azure Website Shared plan
As this seems to be a commercial venture using the shared plan could cause unwanted, business damaging outages. Some of the shared plan's limits (CPU, memory) can possibly be triggered by a short but intensive burst of requests. The required requests are significantly less than for a DoS which is kind of the worst case. When a resource has been used over limit your azure website will be "switched off" until the calculation period for the limit has passed. For an online store scenario this would mean a significant service disruption. Assuming that there are no unwanted or malicious requests at all, there is still no reliable way to guesstimate your resource usage from the information you provided. You would have to deploy the actual application with actual (or closely approximated) data,

Any ideas on how to make it work without having to add index.php? It doesn't require mod_rewrite. Just add this line on top of your .htaccess: DirectoryIndex index.html index.php This will make apache automatically find and render index.html if found otherwise index.php will be shown in any sub-directory under DOCUMENT_ROOT.

Is it possible to make a tcp connection(Server-Client) on a Shared Hosting?
As long as you can get a dedicated IP address in the shared hosting, you should be able to float a TCP server there. Please note that, you can float a TCP server even when you IP is shared, but then there is no guarantee on the port number -- some other tenant on that shared IP can also end up using the same port number and that might be an issue. Can your provider allocate you a specific port (or ports) -- if so, then you can do without having a dedicated IP address. Here is a good read: https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/426 Once you have a connection, it is a matter of sending updates periodically via the socket to refresh it instead of a manual refresh.

SECURITY: exploring shared hosting with basic shell account
Listing active session files is different from being able to read the contents of the actual files themselves, the first is among the cons of shared hosting, the second is a server misconfiguration. The file /etc/passwd no longer stores security sensitive information, merely data that users are allowed to view about themselves, so this needs to be publicly readable. Passwords are stored in shadow files which are not world readable.

exec alternative to trigger multiple new php threads in shared hosting
Typically such tasks are spawned via internal requests inside the http server. Just use phps [virtual()][1]or the [curl extension][2] for more complex tasks. You are however limited to phps web configuration, so take care about the limits like execution timeout and the like. I doubt there is a way to spawn a real process on a web hosters system. That would be a horrible security thread! Often such tasks are also delegated to some sort of job scheduler implementation which is triggered by cron, poor mans cron or an ajax based trigger. This means you have to implement a scheduler for jobs waiting to be processed. But it also brings a good separation of separate jobs.

Turn strict mode ON in innoDB in MYSQL in shared hosting
According to mysql documentation ( http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/innodb-parameters.html and http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/innodb-other-changes-strict-mode.html ) inno db strict mode is a global dynamic setting. As a dynamic setting you may change it on runtime, but as a global setting you may do it only if your user has the SUPER privilege. Users without SUPER privilege can't manage this setting because its value affects to all clients. So only server administrators may turn on/off this setting. Regards.

create virtual subdomain from folder throught htaccess in shared hosting panel
I had the same issue before, you must use cpanel to create the subdomain. If I remember right there was a dns issue with this code: RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.com [NC] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ([^.]+).domain.com [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/index [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*) http://domain.com/%1 [P] If you don't want to use cpanel creating wildcard domain entry such as *.domain.com should help.

Automate SQL Server 2008 backup and restore on shared hosting with limited permissions
In case you don’t have full access to SQL Server and the machine that is running it you can’t really initiate a restore command (maybe there are some workarounds but I’m not familiar with any). What you can do if SQL Server is on a public IP address is setup some kind of replication between two servers so they synchronize automatically. Again, not sure if this is possible w/o full access to machine but you can give it a try. Final solution would be to use one of the third party comparison and synchronization tools to synchronize databases at a given time. Just find a tool that has command line interface such as Data Diff from Apex. Another one you can use is Data Compare from Red Gate but I’m sure there must be others too. Note that these tools are not free …

How to securely store sensitive data on a shared-hosting provider while accessible to server-side scripts?
No matter what you do I think you have to trust the hosting provider in this instance. You can't hide the information since, as you say your self, you must store the secret key ,unencrypted, on their server(s). This is the reason for never storing sensitive data on someone else equipment if you don't trust them completely (and you should never do that). Just the fact that you consider doing this makes me think the data ain't really that sensitive at all (and in that case the entire discussion is pointless). TL;DR Don't share your secrets with other people, try to host your own sensitive data instead, if it really is that sensitive.

Set network shared folder only allowing admin users
You control who can access a share by setting the DACL (Discretionary Access Control List) on the share. You can do that by calling GetNamedSecurityInfo to retrieve the current permissions on the object, then modify the DACL, then call SetNamedSecurityInfo to associate the modified DACL with the share. Alternatively, you could call NetShareGetInfo with information level 503 to retrieve the current security descriptor, then modify the DACL, and then call NetShareSetInfo with information level 1501 to associate the modified security descriptor with the share. Lacking a really good reason to do otherwise, however, I'd use Get/SetNamedSecurityInfo. Manipulating DACLs is painful enough -- you don't need to add any extra difficulty.

static web method - the risk of shared values between users
It is safe to run your method as a static, as long as it does not depend on static variables that are outside of your static method. Here a example of how not to use statics in asp.net web applications: public static string SaveSomething; public static void DoSomething() { SaveSomething = "something"; //... do more code AnotherAction(SaveSomething); } First the SaveSomething string property is set to your value. In the meanwhile this property could be set by another request/user because it shares the property. Now if you recall the property and use it for AnotherAction it may not be the same value as you initially set. If you want to use references to external static variables, you have to be sure those variables are safe to use in that manner. M

Adding sources for shared library in GDB
In order for GDB to know what sources match your some_shared_library.so, you must build it with debugging info (usually -g flag). Once you've done that (and it sounds like you haven't), on many platforms (e.g. Linux) GDB will find the sources automatically. On other platforms, dir is the right command to tell GDB where the sources are.

You don't necessarily need Visual Studio to build the solution. Adding existing users from a table to a membership database
It does actually store passwords. You probably have it configured for ‘hashed’ passwords – so you can’t actually see the passwords in the table – only a 1 way hash of the passwords. If you set the passwordFormat to Clear, the passwords will be in plain text within the db. That being said, for security I do suggest you use Hashed. Do a search on google on how to hash your existing passwords so they can be put in the db in the correct format. But if you want to get it up and running quickly, use Clear and then Hash them in the future once you’ve got everything working. And just a note - the password field is on the aspnet_Membership table.
