Unable to access Samba folder from Windows (Using Raspberry Pi XMBC as a Samba Server)
That may depend on the directory and file rights. If the us who runs smb have no access rights, you can't read or write files. You can find out file permissions with ls -la you will also see owner and owner group. You can try to set read and write permissions for all (chmod 777 directory -R). If this was the problem, then you should give read and write permissions only to the user that runs smb. Set permissions for all back to 0 (770) because of security reasons. Here you find a tutorial on set up samba for Rasapberry Pi.

Django media directory needs execute permission
Setting execute on a directory means something very different from x on a file. From the excellent answer over at Unix.SE When applying permissions to directories on Linux, the permission bits have different meanings than on regular files. [...] The execute bit allows the affected user to enter the directory, and access files and directories inside Setting x on the directory seems to be (I'm not a security expert) benign, and apparently required, so nothing to worry about. x on the files is what you want to avoid.

Why do I get the error "bash: ./a.out: Permission denied" when I execute a C program in Linux mint 15
I think, you are trying to run your program on an NTFS partition, different from the one on which Mint is installed. Try to compile the program in your ext4 partition and generate the a.out there. It should run.

What is this android.permission.STATUS_BAR_SERVICE used for? And what is the difference between uses-permission and permission?
The STATUS_BAR_SERVICE permission is used for apps that what to be the actual status bar. This is a protected permission so unless you're building your own ROM that includes replacing the status bar then I don't think this is the permission you want. By the sound of it all you want to do is put notifications in the notification bar. So just using the functionality here should be all your interested in. You shouldn't need to mess with any special status bar related permissions.

How Should I Debug Samba with GDB
Download samba source code from http://www.samba.org and compile it (without source code, it will be impossible to do symbolic debugging). Stop or kill any other samba instances. Start samba under gdb: gdb <path/to/compiled/smbd> Specify smbd parameters: set args -i -M single Parameters -i -M single force smbd to start as single process, do not daemonize and print all messages and errors to stdout/stderr. Now, you can set breakpoints and trace your source code as you normally would with any other program. Note: instead of using gdb, you might find more convenient to use gdb-tui (gdb text user interface), or use other debuggers like ddd.

Automount samba folder on Mac
I followed https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3221944?start=15&tstart=0 The key is setting the mount point in your home directory is by following three steps. Add this line to the end of /etc/auto_master: /- auto_smb Created /etc/auto_smb with the following line: /Users/user/mount -fstype=smbfs,soft smb://domain;user:password@server/folder Run automount: automount -vc The troubleshooting points are: If you encounter "Too many users" you need to review your SMB path for syntax errors. Also be careful of incorrect username / passwords, or passwords with special symbols. e.g. @ would need to be replaced with %40.

Android - Mount a Samba share in code
Probably smbfs/cifs are currently not supported by your kernel. As Delyan said, ensure your kernel can mount these filesystem : $ cat /proc/filesystems nodev sysfs nodev rootfs nodev bdev nodev proc nodev cgroup nodev tmpfs nodev debugfs nodev sockfs nodev usbfs .... If they are not listed, you should try to do a modprobing (sometimes the module you want just have to be activated), get root access then : # modprobe <modulename(without.ko)> e.g. : # modprobe cifs If it doesn't work you will have to change or recompile your kernel (including appropriate modules).

Why would my samba connection fail after an upgrade to windows 2012?
Windows Server 2012 includes latest version of SMB protocol 3.0 and it full of really interesting updates and improvements (details and some relevant discussion here). As with any serious improvements there is a compromise in terms of legacy clients support. Probably there is no support for SMB 3.0 on your Samba client side or some backward compatibility should be enabled on Server 2012 side.

SecurityException: Permission denied (missing INTERNET permission?)
[Make sure you read whole answer, incl. addendum at the very end!] Exception you are getting (SecurityException: Permission denied (missing INTERNET permission?)), clearly indicates that you are not allowed to do networking. That's pretty indisputable fact. But how can this happen? Usually it's either due to missing <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> entry in your AndroidManifest.xml file or, as internet permission is granted at installation not at run time, by long standing, missed bug in Android framework that causes your app to be successfully installed, but without expected permission grant. My Manifest is correct, so how can this happen? Theoretically, presence of uses-permission in Manifest perfectly fulfills the requirement and from developer sta

Why does chrome say this app doesn't have permission to call "management.get" despite having "management" permission?
Only extensions may use the chrome.management API. What you've created is a Chrome App, which doesn't implement nor recognize the management permission (compare the permissions of apps with the permissions of extensions to see the difference). If you want to use the management API within an app, you need to publish a Chrome App and a Chrome extension, and use the external message passing API to communicate with each other.

Why won't shell_exec execute files but does execute simple commands?
You want to use system in the second case, and not shell_exec. system executes an external program and displays the output. shell_exec executes a command via shell and returns the complete output as a string. and for good measure: exec simply executes an external program. Furthermore you want to make sure your external program is executable and (though you have stated it, I'll restate this) has execute permissions for the user which is running the web server. You also want to make sure the directory your external program is running in has the ability to write to its directory or /tmp or whatever output directory you have set. Finally you should always use absolute paths for executing things like this in cron or php or whatever... so don't use ./c-compiled-file argv1 argv2 argv3, but

Execute a command and close the connection or open once and execute all the commands and close after?
Generally speaking, with a few very specific exceptions, you connect to the DB ONCE at the start of your script, then reuse that connection throughout the script. While MySQL's connection protocol is fairly fast, you're still wasting a considerable amount of CPU cycles by setting up and tearing down the DB connections. This will be specially true if you're connecting via TCP sockets, forcing an entire new TCP connection to be built for every request.

IE permission denied
The permission denied error could be coming from trying to manipulate the DOM before the document is ready. As for the events and formatting no longer working, using JavaScript and jquery to select things can cause issues. When you use document.getElementById it will update the DOM and the rendered page but it will not update the associated jQuery objects. To solve this you either need to re-generate the jQuery object (using $('selector')) and reattach the handlers or try something like $(document.getElementById('objectId')).html('result'); where you use javascript to find the DOM element to avoid the permission error then modify if using the associated jQuery object.

Permission levels for a tab
This doesn't sound like a good idea. Firstly I would recommend using an actual database, e.g. SQLite. I also think storing user permissions in a file is a particularly poor way of ensuring security (as the user can just edit the file). Using a real database will allow you to extract the users permission directly from the database without having to search. Furthermore depending on the database you chose you may be able to use various integrity features for security. I would recommend, that you put the information in a database, then use the logged in user's information to pull the correct permissions level, and if it is high enough load the tab. Depending on your security needs you can also enforce some kind of integrity checks on the database and loading the tab from an external source (

Add write permission and keep gid
man 2 chmod has this to say: If the calling process is not privileged (Linux: does not have the CAP_FSETID capability), and the group of the file does not match the effective group ID of the process or one of its supplementary group IDs, the S_ISGID bit will be turned off, but this will not cause an error to be returned. I am guessing that git is not in the apache group, so when git changes the mode on the directory, the setgid bit is automatically cleared. You can either add git to the apache group, or use a privileged account to do the chmod.

Permission in calling service from another app
I think you're missing the permission declaration in App manifest A. http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/security/permissions.html See Declaring and Enforcing permissions. Also, if both the apps are signed and authored by you (with the same signature) you can declare them in both manifests so that the order in which they are installed doesn't affect this. Ideally the permission name should be .permission.
